The Day of the National Guard of Ukraine is a public holiday celebrated every year on November 4, until 2000. After the Internal Troops of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine were renamed the National Guard, this date is celebrated on March 26. The current National Guard is a unit that has entered the system of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, it performs law enforcement functions. In fact, the National Guard was formed in combat conditions — the beginning of Russia's war against the people of Ukraine. It was during this period that the NSU was created by the Law "On the National Guard of Ukraine".
March 26 National Guard Day of Ukraine — a brief history of the holiday
The Internal Troops became the main base for the formation of the National Guard. But a completely new function was assigned to the NSU, in the military sphere - participation in measures to stop armed conflicts and provocations, as well as to prevent mass crossing of the state border from the territories of neighboring countries. The National Guard takes part in special operations — stopping the activity of organized and armed groups. Law enforcement functions of NSU:
Protection of the constitutional order;
Restoration of law and order;
Fight against criminal organizations.
NSU Day is an all-Ukrainian holiday when the military and all those involved are honored. On this date, congratulations are heard from officials, the President of Ukraine. Servicemen who have achieved significant success in their difficult task (protecting the Motherland) are awarded orders, medals, thanks and other awards. Every Guardsman in this extremely difficult time for the country brings our Victory over the Russian invaders closer. The National Guard of Ukraine is at the forefront of defending our independence and territorial integrity. On the day of the National Guard of Ukraine, it is worth congratulating everyone who steadfastly stands guard over our peace.
On March 18, 2015, the President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko signed a decree on the introduction of the National Guard Day. March 26 was chosen as the date of the celebration. The reason is the colossal importance of this organization in protecting the borders of the state and ensuring the security of the interests of Ukrainian citizens. The National Guard of Ukraine was restored several times, the last one was born in an extremely difficult time for the country. After the escape of the fourth president of Ukraine (Viktor Yanukovych), during the entry of Russian troops into the Crimea, O. Turchynov, acting as the President, wrote an appeal to the Verkhovna Rada, which discussed the need to restore the NSU. It was in March 2014 that the draft law on the restoration of a special military formation was approved. The majority of people's deputies voted for this draft law.
Some facts about the Guard:
During the anti-terrorist operation, 212 National Guardsmen died, about 800 soldiers were seriously injured;
In August 2015, during the "Against Constitutional Changes" rally held near the Verkhovna Rada, four National Guard servicemen were killed by a grenade used by a volunteer battalion of the Ministry of Internal Affairs;
At the time of enlistment into the ranks of the National Guard, everyone receives a breast badge;
The first battalion was sworn in on April 5, 2014.
