One of the most common breakfasts in the world is French toast. This quick breakfast is in particular demand among residents of the United States. In Ukraine, this dish is known under the name "griffins". How to make toast for breakfast in a tasty and original way, you will not need so many ingredients for this. Toast recipes for breakfast have a huge number of variations, their variety allows you to choose the perfect option for everyone.

Historical facts about toast for breakfast

Back in the 5th century, pieces of bread soaked in egg were prepared - French toast. The first mention of toast dates back to the 4th century AD in the collection of Latin recipes - "Apicius". The recipe mentions soaking bread in milk, but there was no special name for the dish. In the fifteenth century, a popular French breakfast was called “pain perdu”, which translates as “lost bread”. "Bread breakfast" was made from stale bread.

Toasts can be served as a main dish or as a dessert. If toast is a dessert, then eggs are beaten with milk, sugar and cinnamon. Finished toasts are poured with syrup, sprinkled with powdered sugar, served with butter, honey or jam. A little more history about the most common breakfast: "Toast" comes from the Latin "torrere", which means "to burn". The first printed mention of toast is in the recipe "Oyle Soppys" in 1430.

Onions stewed in beer and oil, toasted bread was added to it as flavoring. In fact, in ancient times, fried bread was not eaten as an independent dish - it was added to soups and drinks for flavor. How did the modern form of toast appear? Bakers from Europe used closed rectangular forms to make the crust the thinnest - 18th century. To this day, humanity has not come up with a better form for perfectly thin and tender toast.

A simple recipe for toast for breakfast and the main ingredients

Toast for breakfast:

  • 150 g of feta;

  • 4 tablespoons of natural yogurt;

  • ½ lemon, squeezed juice;

  • 1 tablespoon of olive oil;

  • 250 g of boiled beets;

  • 4 eggs;

  • 4 slices of bread;

  • 2 tablespoons of dukkah (nut-spice mixture);

  • Parsley for garnish.

The cooking process

Place the feta, yogurt, lemon juice, a little seasoning, and 2 tablespoons of cold water in a food processor and blend until smooth.

Heat the olive oil in a pan, dry the beetroot well with kitchen paper, then fry in the pan for 2-3 minutes on each side or until lightly caramelised.

Prepare a poached egg. Crack each egg into a teacup or saucepan, then carefully tip into a large saucepan of simmering lightly salted water and cook for 2 minutes or until the white is set, then remove with a slotted spoon.

Place a piece of toast on each plate, spread with a dollop of whipped feta, spoon over beetroot pieces, top with a poached egg, then sprinkle with dukkah and parsley.

Sliced toasted bread was first sold in the USA in July 1928. It was advertised as "the biggest step in the baking industry since packaged bread." An interesting fact: the implementation of toast increased the consumption of this product, because in order to get a piece of uniform shape, it was not necessary to make extra movements. Already sliced and packaged toast could be bought anywhere, and sales of jams and spreads spread on toasted toast also increased. Fried bread is served in different ways in different countries. For example, in Great Britain, toast is a traditional breakfast, it is served with bacon, eggs, sausages, beans, blood sausage, tomatoes and mushrooms.

Sri Lanka is a place where toast is eaten with curry soup and mint tea. Japan - the thickest pieces of bread are toasted here. In South Korea, "bread breakfast" can be tasted as street food with various fillings - fried eggs, vegetables, meat. In Asian countries, "square bread" is eaten with coconut jam. Some people consider toast not a dietary food, but such a snack can be made useful.
