When did Valentine's Day begin to be celebrated and why?

When did they start celebrating Valentine's Day in Ukraine?
During the Soviet rule, this holiday was considered a "relic of the bourgeois regime" and was not celebrated at all. After all, the only "correct" type of love was allowed - "People to the Party and the Party to the people." But information about St. Valentine's Day actively filtered through the iron curtain, so after gaining independence, this holiday began to be celebrated almost immediately. Of course, on an unofficial level.
As far as traditions are concerned, Ukraine in this regard is no different from other European countries, where the holiday has long since become a mainly commercial event.
By the way, an interesting fact: the Catholic Church does not recognize the same legendary Saint Valentine at all.
